Understanding social issues through the lens of Jewish history

Hello sixth grade families! Our goal this year is to have deep discussions about the issues that concern us as Jewish, American pre-teens through the lens of Jewish history (with an emphasis on modern Jewish history).  There are many parallels between contemporary social issues and the issues that shaped Israel and modern Jewish culture. My goal is to take time to listen to our students and assemble a list of issues of concern to them and to build a curriculum that allows us to reflect on these issues as well as their historical Jewish parallels.  Students will not only learn about Jewish history but also identify with the voices of the past that have dealt with these issues before (in similar and different ways).
