Friendship and the Interpersonal in Jewish Mystical Tradition

Saturday, August 17, 2024 13 Av 5784

12:30 PM - 1:45 PM

Jewish mystical tradition has much to say about the significance and practice of friendship, as does Judaism as a whole. Drawing upon examples from kabbalistic and Hasidic traditions, this talk will explore notions and practices of friendship between two people, as well as friendship in the context of the collective, such as in the case of intentional fellowships and communities. Larry Fine is the Irene Kaplan Leiwant Chair and professor of Religion, emeritus, at Mount Holyoke College. He is the author and editor of numerous books and studies on the history of Jewish mystical tradition, including Physician of the Soul, Healer of the Cosmos: Isaac Luria and His Kabbalistic Fellowship (Stanford University Press), and most recently, an edited volume, Friendship in Jewish History, Culture and Religion (Penn State University Press).
